...species? Millions of climate-change refugees already? An entire culture soon to disappear as the atolls of the South Pacific drown?

I cut my teeth on science fiction as a kid -- almost as soon as I could read. There was a distinct dearth of twee stories about fairies available, since the cardboard boxes of paperbacks Dad brought home from work were being shared around by adult men. Oh sure, there was some sword and sorcery, and I remember reading Fafrd and Grey Mouser with glee. But there was a real strain of post-WWII dark dystopian fiction as well, and deep down inside it stuck with me, decades later come back to haunt me. "Stand on Zanzibar" is one such about a catastrophically overpopulated Earth.
