(60,523 posts)If Pence goes first, Trump picks the new VP (as with Nixon picking Ford after Agnew resigned). When Agnew resigned, the Speaker of the House was a Democrat, so Nixon moved quickly to name a new VP. He settled on Ford as the least controversial (and certainly not the first preference) of his possible choices. At that point, Nixon didn't see himself resigning yet over Watergate. When he did resign, Ford became President, and moved to nominate another Republican for his VP. Ford no doubt enraged the rapidly rightward-radicalizing Republicans by picking the most flamboyant moderate Republican around, NY Governor Nelson Rockefeller, who had no trouble sailing through to confirmation (52 Democratic Senators and 36 Republican Senators voting to confirm). Again, this made sure the Democratic Speaker of the House had no chance of directly succeeding to the presidency. Ford remained the only president that never got there through a presidential election.
