Specifically, it's a state court in Manhattan (New York County), where Trump is not popular.

What does popularity have to do with the legal issues? Well, in New York, the judges of the Supreme Court (which, confusingly, is the trial court) are elected. This case has been assigned to Justice Jennifer Schechter. She wasn't elected to the Supreme Court, but was elected to the Civil Court, and is now an Acting Supreme Court Justice. In other words, she won an election in Manhattan.
