Our old home, a nice old California bungalow, is right now about a quarter mile as fire flies from the Creek Fire's mandatory evacuation zone. Our 1/10 acre level area lot was cut into the side of a mountain on a street of homes on similar lots (full of kids, wonderful Halloween neighborhood). It's not that I didn't look at the mountains surrounding us and think it couldn't happen to us, only that fire would have to sweep across a couple hundred homes to get to us, and in those days it seemed very unlikely that it wouldn't be stopped before then.

Read that the Ventura County fire at some points was advancing an acre a second. Still hard to imagine, but I'm very glad to hear you're safe with family and the dogs are having fun.
