US vice-president Mike Pence is not welcome, say senior Palestinian officials [View all]

Palestinian officials have threatened to snub a meeting between Mahmoud Abbas and the US vice-president, Mike Pence, as protests over the Trump administration’s recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel rocked the region.

Jibril Rajoub, a senior official in President Abbas’s ruling Fatah party, said Mr Pence was “unwelcome in Palestine” and would not meet the Palestinian leader in Bethlehem on December 19. “Such a meeting will not take place,” he said.

Mr Pence was due to visit the region to test the reaction to President Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem. Washington officials also confirmed that Mr Abbas had been invited to the White House to meet Mr Trump. They said that Mr Pence’s visit to the Middle East would go ahead as scheduled. - The Times
