In reply to the discussion: How confronting Democrats now could position Gillibrand to take on Trump in 2020 [View all]dlk
(13,288 posts)Gillibrand is an active crusader for women's safety. I have no doubt she cares deeply about victims of sexual assault and has worked hard in the uphill battle for better outcomes for victims. However, I also believe going after Franken was a poor choice with evidence showing this was a setup by dirty tricksters. This will make her judgment come into question and would be an issue in any future presidential runs.
Joining the Republicans in continuing to re-litigate Bill Clinton's cheating is also a losing argument. Yes, he cheated on his wife and yes, that was wrong. Republicans spending over $70 million of taxpayer dollars to impeach him was even more wrong. I am not in any way advocating infidelity. However, if everyone in Washington who has cheated had to resign, how many men and women would actually be left in office? There's such a thing as going too far. Republicans have made it their business to routinely go too far. Democrats should do better.
