These guys think they're smarter than everyone else. Like the guy in Texas who tried to set up his SYG defense with video and rehearsed lines.

Holmes is clever and smart. What he failed to grasp is that the months of planning, the setting of booby trap, wearing of body armor, are all evidence that he knew he was committing a crime. I imagine just a few sessions with a police psychiatrist, and he'll be pronounced "sane".
