The argument from Dems is that "then we become just like them."

Well...yeah. How has it worked out for us by being just like US? We get our ass kicked every time. The bully in the school yard always takes your lunch until you stand up and fight back. That doesn't mean you're just like the bully, it shows the other bullies that you will stand your ground and are prepared to take them on.
