Bush Says He's Got Better Stuff To Do With His Time Than Rally For Romney [View all]

July 22, 2012|10:37 am

Former President George W. Bush is respectfully declining his invitation to attend the Republican National Convention next month in Tampa, Florida. In an email sent Friday to the Associated Press, Mr. Bush’s spokesman, Freddy Ford, said “President Bush was grateful for the invitation,” and he “is confident that Mitt Romney will be a great president. But he’s still enjoying his time off the political stage and respectfully declined the invitation to go to Tampa.”

In a recent interview, Mr. Bush shed some light on why he has decided to reject the invitation.

“Eight years was awesome, and I was famous and I was powerful. But I have no desire for fame and power anymore,” said Mr. Bush in an interview with the Hoover Institution’s Peter Robinson. “I’ve crawled out of the swamp. And, I’m not crawling back in!” he said. “I’m interested in politics. I’m a supporter of Mitt Romney. I hope he does well. But he can do well without me.”

___ According to this month's CBS News/New York Times poll, more voters say Bush deserves the bulk of the blame for the nation's economic downturn than think Obama bears most of the responsibility. Almost two-thirds of voters think Romney's economic policies would somewhat resemble that of Bush's.
