No reason not to believe it. He trusted whoever told him that.

That sort of info is passed along a lot "in the biz," I suspect.

I don't blame him at all. There's no reason, unless you suspect it's a lie, to go investigate on your own with different sources. I'm sure he was already working long hours, as were his assistants. It's not like they were big stars. Easy just to choose someone else.
