21. Possibly but scale is important

I can afford to set a concrete footing in the ground and bury wire to keep the predators that dig from coming in. I also keep things covered up top to keep hawks from diving in. Chickens are apparently very tasty creatures.

I have friends that have some sort of small scale egg farm and their barn is fairly secure with some big covered outdoor space. But now and then something finds a way in and slaughters a few hens, even with roosters standing guard. Multiply that size a bunch and I’m guessing it becomes even more difficult to keep things secure.

I’m not arguing for large scale farming of chickens. I keep hens so that I don’t have to deal with factory eggs, and it’s easy for me to do. But it’s hard to keep predators out!
