We can't stop the tax bill with the votes we have. The repubs can pass it without us.

On the CR, the situation is different. The reason that a shutdown is a possibility is that the repubs need some Democrats to support funding the government because there are enough crazies in the repub party that won't vote for the continuing resolution as to create the risk of a shutdown.

You might think that gives Democrats leverage. But that leverage goes away as soon as the repubs pass the tax bill. Then were stuck being viewed, fairly or not, as the ones who prevented a CR from going through to fight a train that already has left the station.

It's one thing to stand firm against the CR unless it deals with DACA and/or CHIP; its another thing to stand firm against the CR unless a completely separate bill is changed or not enacted.
