I would say that this authoritarian ploy has been a century in the making. I know that when I was growing up in Amarillo Texas I heard the majority of the principles that maga voices, "said out loud" frequently.
From the techbros and corporations to the evilgelicals to reich-wing politicians and their base I have a very bad feeling. I worry that the one third of the electorate who are just beginning to wake up and vote will roll over and play dead if it becomes obvious that the authoritarian Republican party is in total control. Already we are well down the way from democracy to electoral autocracy.
