When I was a kid, my family took camping vacations every summer for 4 to 6 weeks each. We traveled to all 48 contiguous US states and Canada.
There were five of us kids, just like the Romneys. We had two dogs. Usually we sent the dogs to a wonderful kennel near home. Sometimes we took the dogs with us. In one station wagon we had two adults, five kids, and two dogs (miniature poodles). Three people in the front seat, four kids across the back seat. This was in the days before seatbelts, so you couldn't do that now. Most cars today don't have a bench seat in front, however, there are now third-row seats.
Food, clothing, and dogs in the back (although the dogs managed to be in laps quite a bit). We used a car-top carrier for the tents, sleeping bags, etc. My folks were obviously very efficient packers, and everything was organized.
If we needed more room, we pulled a small trailer for equipment. The dogs would never have been "stored" outside the car.
I find the Romneys' attempted justification of their behavior disgusting. They could clearly afford to own or rent an appropriately sized vehicle for their vacations.
