It didn't seem that big a deal to him in all that time, but suddenly it's super important now that the mother has changed her mind about it? I agree that we can't know for sure what's in anyone's mind, but it's not a great leap to think that the poor relationship between the parents plays at least some part in the father's determination to have the procedure done now against the mother's wishes.
