and E. coli in particular are too small to be filtered by a gravity type filter. If you want to filter out E. Coli, you need a filter with very fine holes and a pump to force the water molecules through. Of course you would only want to use that filter 1 time since it would then be contaminated with E. Coli.

Boil your water to kill bacteria.
