And it's easy to run out of money. I know a family that sold their father's $305,000 home to afford his nursing home bill and went broke after 6 years. It's easy to do with nursing home costs of between 4,500 a month and up. An Alzheimer's patient can live anywhere from two years to ten or more after diagnosis, depending on the aggressiveness of his dementia. Selling a home usually isn't an option if a remaining spouse needs it for a roof over their head.
