18. I don't want to defend Trump, but

if it's true that he was responding to personal insults (and apparently also McCain made a personal (as opposed to a policy or strategy) comment about him prior to Trump's insults of McCain), then to me that's a little different from an unprovoked attack.

It all depends on how professional McCain and Trump's political rivals were in their initial comments.

However, it is childish and unprofessional for Trump to take the bait. If insulted, he should be smart enough and professional enough to come up with a response that does not sink so low. Pres. Obama, for example, does a great job of this.
