(21,140 posts)We had about 30 crews of 4 to 6 workers. The big mowers that are used to do apartment complexes and such cost as much as a new truck. I'm not talking about a couple of guys with push mowers driving around neighborhoods.
Any property of decent size will require proof of liability and workers comp insurance from their landscapers. We sent out hundreds of them every year. The same goes for construction work. And those kinds of insurance don't cover undocumented workers, so it's just too risky for a business to have workers they are paying cash.
The thing is, all of our workers had SS cards. They were paying SS and Medicare and we were paying the employers portion. Most were not having much income tax withheld because of their number of dependants. But the FICA taxes were being paid, even if they were using fake SS cards and have no hope of ever getting any SS benefits. Things like food stamps and Medicaid require SS cards. Are those being verified by government agencies? I don't know.
