(5,376 posts)Except for the daughter's birth part, of course. I found it to be a community rife with "rednecks" whose far right mindset was 'way over the top for me, since even back then I was a die-hard liberal. Sounds like it's not much different now, as I see their sheriff had vowed not to enforce the background check laws Oregon's legislature just passed. Probably even this awful event in his county will not serve to change his mind. Residents pretty much held environmentalists in contempt, as timber was Roseburg's economic base, evidenced by the clearcutting in the nearby forests, greatly impacting the beauty of the area. If you google "The Roseburg Blast" you'll read about a huge explosion that wiped out much of the downtown in 1959, had nothing to do with their right-wing policies, but an interesting story nonetheless. They also once had what they called "weather-predicting goats" grazing on a surrounding hillside, pretty much bereft of foliage, may or may not have been the result of all that logging.
My spouse's job landed us in Roseburg, but we didn't stay long, moving north to Eugene, that hotbed of liberalism. Liked that lots better! I feel terrible about the tragic events of yesterday, doubly so since I have a grandson attending an Oregon community college in another town, and can definitely relate to the horror and aftermath of the shootings.
This is probably more than you wanted to know, but thank you for asking and for reading my answer, if you made it through all my words.
Cheers and blessings.
