14. My grandmother (and her family) were Jews from Budapest
Sat Nov 21, 2015, 11:35 AM
Nov 2015

Fortunately, they emigrated to the US in the teens (around 1913). My grandfather was also Hungarian, from Transylvania, in Romania, which was then a part of Hungary.

I wouldn't be here today if they hadn't both left the country. They never wanted to go back.

I visited Budapest briefly about 8 years ago, and—not knowing where my great-grandparents had lived—roamed the streets of the Jewish Ghetto, trying to imagine my beloved grandmother as a child there. (Unfortunately, she and her brother had been sent to live in an orphanage for part of their childhood, because the family was purportedly too poor to keep all the children.)
