back in the 50s the Third World (a phrase coined by Sauvy, who thought its problem was not nearly enough people, because he was French and had been traumatized by the 20s' population contraction, when they banned abortion as treason to the state) was completely certain that if you dammed every river, soaked the crops in pesticide, and doubled the population you'd "catch up" by, oh, say 1965

the tremendous failure of this vision of the world gave us creationists, 9-11, ISIS, cartels, and leveled forests
