School cafeteria worker faces dismissal for giving student free lunch
By Debbie Bryce | For the Journal Updated Dec 22, 2015

Ironically, Bowden said she later found out the girl was within her $11 limit and could have charged the meal. But the girl didnt know what her balance was and was too embarrassed and afraid to ask.
She came to me, she said she was hungry and she didnt have any money, Bowden said. I would do it again in the same situation.
Superintendent Howell said students going through the hot lunch line simply enter a four-digit code and if their account exceeds the $11 credit limit, parents are notified.
...
If, after notifying the parents that the account needs payment and the district doesnt receive any money, students are given the option of having a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and milk, according to the superintendent.

Based on this, it still seems improper that she would be fired.
Rather, if the school's mission is education and if all children need to not be hungry in order to properly be educated, then the school should work towards fulfilling its mission even if it requires feeding all the children who attend the school whether they can pay or not. It would be for the good of the children and eventually for the good of society.

Sounds as if the employee just didn't follow proper procedure for getting the kid a lunch.

To Me, this action is an outrage to all people, no compassion to a kid who is hungry.
