(53,236 posts)I am a great believer in the economic utility of loopholes.
I love these guys..."OMG you can deduct your business jet! We Must End This Loophole Right Now!" Well guess what kids? A business jet is a Tool To Make Your Business More Profitable. Very few people buy those things because they're too good to sit in coach with the hoi polloi. Most of the people who buy them do it because it lets their company make more money...which leads to more employees, which leads to higher tax revenues (not counting all the property taxes on the plane, fuel taxes on the Jet A at 165 gallons per hour...) which leads to me and you not having to sit next to some self-entitled asshole who's pissed at having to fly commercial...
The advantage of a high rate/high loophole tax structure like we had pre-Reagan is it gave rich people incentive to hire workers and invest in capital equipment - because those things are deductible.
My original thought was, let's run the rate up there and leave deductions where they are as a temporary emergency measure. I think within five years, with proper use of defense spending cuts and the increase in economic activity from all the new infrastructure this NON-revenue neutral measure will bring, we can pay down the deficit and debt to the point where we can bring back the loopholes.
