(20,335 posts)Of all the things you WANT to be very, very concerned about, antibiotics resistance in bacteria is right at the top of the list. Before we had effective antibiotics, death from what we now consider treatable diseases was common. An infected tooth, or a bad cut, would be a potentially life-threatening condition. Without antibiotics, organ transplants are out of the question. Antibiotics have made much of what we consider civilized life possible. People don't realize anymore what it was like to live before penicillin was first introduced.
And the worst thing? Many bacteria can spread their resistance to other, unrelated species of bacteria through the sharing of small DNA packets (plasmids) that float independently inside their cells and are freely released into their environments.
