With Iran, in particular, during the 80's we supported both sides of the Iran/Iraq war. Simply to try and get both sides to kill each other. And our ally, Israel, have been assassinating Iranian nuclear scientists in recent years. It was only when Obama pursued nuclear negotiations that we asked them to stop.

There are numerous instances of the US using subterfuge to take down people or governments that don't fall in line with our demands, or have the audacity to implement policies that we don't like, regardless of any blowback we create.
