(58,328 posts)As Hillary got older and became involved in the civil rights movement, inspired by meeting MLK Jr in person in the early 60s, she realized the "Party of Lincoln" had abandoned the fight for civil rights and that the Democratic Party had taken leadership in that fight. It was a period of transition for the two parties, as anyone familiar with that period of history knows. Civil rights leaders used to be Republicans, like MLK Sr., back when Dixiecrats enforced Jim Crow. But then the GOP adopted its "Southern Strategy" and as Hillary saw this she became a Democrat when she was old enough to vote.
By 1972, she was working for the McGovern campaign and registering poor Latinos to vote in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas. What was Bernie Sanders doing in 1972? Writing this "stupid" (his campaign's words) opinion piece in Vermont:
