In reply to the discussion: Vatican Academy Criticizes Sanders’s ‘Monumental Discourtesy’ [View all]CoffeeCat
(24,411 posts)We have the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences who invited Bernie to attend their conference. We also have a press release that they've issued--that lists Bernie's name FIRST in the list of many who are attending.
Again, I've written hundreds of press releases. They could have left Bernie's name off of the press release. Many are attending who weren't mentioned in their press release. They put Bernie's name first.
So, they are obviously--not only happy to have him there, but they're proud of his participating and are leveraging that in the press.
This woman who made the negative comments. Yes, she is the President of the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences. She is also a very conservative bishop. She has an opinion, she's one person. However, the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences selected Bernie to be there. He obviously has the "blessing" (ha, no pun intended) of this important group, in general. Otherwise they would not have invited him.
Her opinion suggests that she does not agree with the group. That's fine. She can have that opinion, which doesn't diminish that Bernie was invited, that this is a high honor and that the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences, as a whole, wants him to be there and it touting his involvement in a press statement.
Here is the text of the press release, for your perusal (and link)

We're delighted to host this conference to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Centesimus Annus, bringing together world leaders, including US Senator Sanders, Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa, Bolivian President Evo Morales, Academicians of the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences such as its President Margaret Archer, and leading scholars such as Professor Daniel Finn, Professor Jeffrey Sachs etc., to examine and discuss changes in politics, economics, and culture in the world these last 25 years in the light of Pope Francis' new encyclical Laudato si'. Our intention is socio-political in the highest sense of the term, because according to art. 1 of our Statutes, the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences was established by the Holy Father John Paul II on 1 January 1994 with the aim of promoting the study and progress of the social sciences, primarily economics, sociology, law and political science.
Title I - Constitution and Aims of the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences
Art. 1
The Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences was established by the Holy Father John Paul II on 1 January 1994 (AAS 86 [1994], 213), with the aim of promoting the study and progress of the social sciences, primarily economics, sociology, law and political science. The Academy, through an appropriate dialogue, thus offers the Church the elements which she can use in the development of her social doctrine, and reflects on the application of that doctrine in contemporary society. The Academy, which is autonomous, maintains a close relationship with the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace.
