(1,701 posts)But what I see changing here is that Iranians don't all view this as a choice between Islam and democracy. That is the mullahs' claim, of course, but there are Iranian politicians who want a more open society and one that is less repressive. There has been a power struggle going on for some time within the Iranian government and the joy of the people when the nuclear agreement was signed was obvious.
I know it won't be easy to overthrow this government, but the Iranian people are the heirs to a long and rich cultural tradition, and they don't identify solely with Islam. It will be interesting to see how this plays out, but, as I said, I am hopeful in the long run. That is, of course, unless we wreck the environment of our planet first. Then all bets are off.
