(14,040 posts)The grooming process started when I was in kindergarten (if not younger--but the first instance I can vividly recall was when I was in kindergarten) and the sexual aspects started when I was 8 or so and lasted until I was 11--which is when my family and I moved out of state. I didn't tell anyone for years... I finally got the courage to tell my parents when I was 20/21. The only reason I told them then was because the guy was coming to visit and I was still living at home at the time and didn't want to be in the same house with him. Or course, when I told them, they didn't believe me... because a) he'd never do that and b) I waited so long. Why I would ever make up something so horrific is beyond me but that's what they thought until several years later he was arrested, charged and convicted of molesting two other young girls.
So, as a survivor of sexual assault, I think the statute of limitations is too short--sexual assault just isn't taken seriously enough if this country. Also, there are a myriad of reasons why people don't come forward sooner but I think the overwhelming reason is posts like yours along with the shaming/blaming that goes along with being sexually assaulted. Why should I come forward if you're going to question my credibility? It happens often enough, that people refuse to come forward because, hey, who will believe them?
