UAW endorses Hillary Clinton for president [View all]

The United Auto Workers is endorsing Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton over Sen. Bernie Sanders for president.

The union announced the endorsement Wednesday prior to UAW President Dennis Williams’ 7 p.m. appearance on MSNBC’s “Hardball with Chris Matthews” to discuss the 2016 election.

“Hillary Clinton understands our issues on trade, understands the complexities of multinational economies and supports American workers, their families and communities,” Williams said in a statement.

Although not as influential as it once was at its peak of 1.5 million in 1979, the UAW has membership and retirees of more than 1 million, including about 412,000 active workers. It’s not unprecedented for the UAW and other to hold off on endorsements during the primary season.
