of asbestos abatement. It's costly to have the asbestos cleaned out (or lead paint) before demolition. So most cities allow these places to fall into ruin, hoping for arson to bring them down.

I photograph abandonments so I am slightly knowledgeable about this topic. Holmesburg Prison is chalk-full of peeling lead paint.
