(56,113 posts)I am not ready to say "yes" or "no" and his family situation makes no difference to me. As someone from a mixed family, we certainly had relatives who didn't like the Jewish side of the family, some who had to re-educated, and some who had no issues. Given that I am also gay, I certainly have experience with people who "have gay family members" who are in fact homophobic. I really don't see anti-Semitism being that different in regards to bigotry.
About your joke, true story: I was a diversity educator for years before I came to Oklahoma, almost 10 years, and it wasn't until I moved here that I actually heard someone say "that person won't Jew you on the price", which I had never heard outside of family stories or movies. Not a week later, my dear friend, an older African-American woman, who was Catholic...married to a Jew...surprise, was upset because someone in the dining hall called her a "Papist." Again, ten years of diversity training and I had never heard that term used! I wasn't even sure what the hell it was. I don't think it is a big term in the deep South.
