On the one hand, as you point out, Trump gets his narcissistic supply of attention from running for president. But if polls keep dropping and Trump sees the looming disaster of being A Loser, then he'll protect his ego by dropping out "because the system is rigged. It's rigged. Believe me, I know. They would never let me win. And I would have won, I would have won BIG, bigger than anyone, but they rigged it."
That's his face-saving exit to keep from becoming a loser.
