Tesla says that even in autopilot mode the driver should keep his/her hands on the wheel and remain alert to their surroundings. Unfortunately, I think Tesla made a mistake by calling it "autopilot" which infers capabilities that the system doesn't have. It's really more of an intelligent cruise control and not close to the capabilities of the Google self-driving cars.
