(290 posts)My old man was in the Air Force for almost 23 years, and military guys are almost always in-your-face patriotic. My dad put his flagpole in the back yard and aimed a light at it. I don't see an issue there. He's proud of what America stands for, though he doesn't do the "USA #1" thing. He doesn't pretend that America is perfect or blameless, unlike a lot of his fellow travelers on the right. Like a lot of ex-military, he votes Republican. I'm pleased to say that he and my mom are both sitting this election out in disgust, though I haven't been successful yet in converting them to vote for Hillary. But they loathe Trump, so at least there's that.
And yeah, Gramps was in the Battle of the Bulge, and he grew up in the Depression. He was a lifelong Democrat. A lot of what became my political leanings are due to his influence. He and Grammy voted for Obama twice, and were damned proud of it, and voted for him when he ran for Senate. I still have one of the Obama bumper stickers he gave me.
And totally agree with you on the loudly praying in public thing. Annoys the living shit out of me for multiple reasons.
