(7,593 posts)Susan McDugal was asked to answer several questions before a grand jury and refused. After she served the maximum 18 months the judge had no choice but to release her, though Susan could have gotten out of jail anytime during her stay by appearing before the grand jury and answering their questions. The federal government then tried to charge her for criminal contempt and obstruction of justice, but the jury hung on contempt and acquitted her on obstruction. She did spend some time imprisoned on charges for fraud and conspiracy as another Former9thWard mentioned.
Joe Arpaio is being charged for criminal contempt. There is no get out of jail free card with criminal contempt. If he is convicted, he will have to serve whatever sentence is imposed (up to six months imprisonment and a $1000 fine).
