They were charged with carrying a firearm in relation to a crime of violence, which has a maximum penalty of life in prison. Prosecutors were trying to 'send a message'. Juries are not going to convict with a life in prison charge when no one was harmed. Juries do not like to be used as tools (or fools) by either side. So they voted not guilty on all the charges in order to send their own message.
