(12,132 posts)Delbert McClinton was the opening act. I say "real" because it was the first concert I purposely bought a ticket to go see in a big arena. I don't count all the elementary school field trips to see orchestras or church-sponsored events that I had to go to.
it was 1981, I was 17, had already graduated high school and had a 10:00pm curfew. I happily lied to my step-asshole as I left for the show knowing I'd break curfew. The BBs hadn't even gotten on stage by 10. I looked at my watch and laughed as 10 sailed by.
I thought the show was great, they played everything I wanted to hear. I didn't know about new members/old members/real members etc...I just wanted to hear the Beach Boys.
Got home and was met at the door by step-asshole. Grounded for life again lol. "The point," he said, "is if you don't come home on time I have to get up out of bed to let you in."
Not "we worry about your safety out alone late at night" or "Our religious convictions prohibit entertainment after a certain hour" Just "It's a pain in my ass for you little bastards to be actual people. Conform better!"
So I said, "well let me have a key and you can sleep in peace and I'll let myself in" but that would be giving up way too much control so his reply was "Fuck you! You're not getting a fucking key!" (he swore a lot when he wasn't around the church people. They never had a clue) to which I said "You'd like that huh?" and he slammed me against a brick wall and held me there, choking me with his forearm and then mom came out and pulled him away.
I left home a few days later and never went back. Still fucking hate that guy.
But the Beach Boys were cool.
