The way he retired has kind of a sour-grapes feel to it: he was racing for the 2016 championship and caused a 10-car wreck with ten laps to go. After the race he just decided "fuck it, I don't want to do this anymore" (or, alternately, "there are nine guys out there who are looking for my ass"
and walked away from the sport. Before he did this, he was a popular driver.
I think whether he drove an "import" (Camrys are made in Kentucky, btw) wouldn't affect his chances: a lot of NASCAR fans drive imports.
