The CEO of Boeing listened in on a phone call between President Trump and the Air Force general in charge of the Lockheed Martin F-35 jet program, Bloomberg
reported Thursday.

Citing two unnamed people familiar with the calls, Bloomberg reported that Trump was in a meeting with Boeing CEO Dennis Muilenburg when he made the latter of two surprise, unusual calls to Lieutenant General Chris Bogdan.

Bogdan is the program executive officer for the Department of Defense agency responsible for purchasing F-35 aircraft for the Navy, Air Force, Marines and some U.S. allies. Trump has frequently been critical of the program’s cost.

Trump’s first call with Bogdan was on Jan. 9, Bloomberg reported. The second, on Jan. 17, took place in front of an apparently surprised Muilenburg, according to Bloomberg’s sources.

Days before taking office, President-elect Donald Trump made two surprise calls to the Air Force general managing the Pentagons largest weapons program, the Lockheed Martin Corp. F-35 jet. Trump, who has repeatedly criticized the $379 billion F-35 program as out of control, made the highly unusual calls to Lieutenant General Chris Bogdan on Jan. 9 and Jan. 17 Muilenburg, whose company makes a fighter jet Trump has suggested might be an alternative to the F-35, was in the president-elects New York office for a meeting during the second call. He appeared caught off-guard but was able to listen in on the call, according to the people, who asked to remain anonymous discussing sensitive information. One of the people said the call was on speakerphone.
