the two I am familiar with preform decently, and serve an urban - under served community, which I applaud.
The creepy part (my earler term) was based on the account of a team (both female) of evaluators (hired by the schools) who worked on the accountability reports for their authorizer (in our case the Mayor's Office), and of a female teacher/friend who taught there for a couple of years. All said there was an awkward dynamic between the male school leaders who came off as controlling and dismissive. Could be just the individuals and not related to the organization. I know a lot of organizations (and schools, and heck currently our own govt) run by creepy individuals 
As I said, I really don't know much about the organization or Gulen.
Don't worry won't going down that side track - I helped start and lead one (also urban - also high performing) for a decade. For the reason you cite (getting sucked into an all night conversation) I usually disengage in those discussions.
