...it appears this was more of a merger than an outright sale.

Alpha Natural Resources 'acquires' Massey Energy, lots of money exchanges hands ($7+ billion), and the Massey Energy name goes bye-bye.

Estimated combined operating costs savings per year from said merger: $150 million.

The cost of the fine should be recouped quite quickly.
