since the Greek and Phoenician traders started plying the eastern Med. And probably long, long before that and continues to this day. Modern container and bulk carriers look huge to us, but are just tiny specs in a vast ocean. Even with today's engineering and technology, there's still numerous combinations of conditions that will sink any ship.
