. . . do not simply put on the brakes and stop within two cars' length. Takes a mile or more for the damn thing to even slow down.

That area is a BUSY shipping lane, surprised there are not more such collisions.

Still, it should not have happened.The captain of the destroyer likely will end his career sorting blankets and counting buckets of paint at a supply depot somewhere.
