(37,648 posts)and lessen govt expense in financing student loans.
While it makes sense that people who aren't good at school work, or have a desire to be a plumber or whatever, not go through the expense and time going to college...that doesn't apply to most people.
A red flag should go up when someone who is college educated, esp. if he has a financial interest in the subject (like a politician who is connected to the govt that gives student loans), tells the public that having a college education is unnecessary and may even be undesirable.
Governments throughout history have not wanted a public that is well educated. They write things, they catch on to things, they are more knowledgeable and probably more independent thinking. Not good for governments. The stupid masses who blindly work at low paying jobs are what is most desirable, except for the hand picked ones to fill spots in tech, medicine, etc. Even then, those workers can be shipped in via Visas.
While may college grads can't find jobs (or at least the jobs they want), it is still true that college grads MAKE MORE MONEY throughout their lifetimes than non-grads. And there's no guarantee of a job even if you DON'T get a college degree and opt instead for a trade school.
Plus, a college education is not ONLY to provide a basis for employment. It is for that, but also is for a general education that adds depth and meaning and fulfillment to one's life. It teaches a person discipline (in sticking with a program for four years), it teaches discussion without anger, it teaches how to get along in an intellectual environment with others who think differently, it broadens exposure to different areas of life (like biology, literature, history, music, philosophy, logic, physics, etc.).
Don't listen when people who are college educated tell YOU that YOU don't need that. It's possibly true, but I would seek another source for advice on that.
