(29,647 posts)I still think it's possible to get a good education at a decent cost, but not if you want to go to a prestigious university. There are many smaller schools and commuter schools where you can get a degree at a cost that's not prohibitive - and take some good classes, too. You can also fare better financially if you start at a community college or two-year school and then transfer.
I think it's also muddied by the fact that we've decided that college degrees are earned only to be parlayed into high paying jobs, not to just be a better-educated person. So people become resentful at the need to go to college.
Add into this mix that we've somehow - as a society, not as liberals or progressives - put a stigma on vocational schools and jobs. We need plumbers and electricians and mechanics and repairmen - and we should be better funding the programs that earn them the two-year degrees they need to get those jobs.
