Flake would be content with a McCain or Romney type, none of whom are unhinged demagogues but would nevertheless push for a conservative agenda. Sometimes, rarely, bad politics and decent character intersect. If at some point Trump is to be shown the door, Democrats will not be able to provide the requisite super-majorities to make it happen. Ultimately, enough Republicans with a spine will need to listen to their constituents and say ENOUGH is ENOUGH, and when those people finally come to their senses, progressives will need to stand tall with them. Debates over policy differences will continue, and those will serve as a basis for cleaning house in '18 and '20, with or without Trump.
