Peterson was named school resource officer of the year in the city of Parkland in 2014, after he had been with the school for five years, records show. According to a booklet announcing the award, Peterson had been "proven to be reliable in handling issues with tact and judgment" and was active in mentoring and counseling students that year. Peterson was also nominated for Parkland deputy of the year in 2017, an internal memo from the sheriff's office dated March 27, 2017, shows.
This officer wasnt a slouch, he was a proven reliable officer, trained to analyze and deal with high pressure situations, and with a lot of practical experience under his belt. Hes being faulted by a gun happy sheriff in a gun happy community for not committing suicide. If the roles had been reversed, I doubt that Sheriff would have gone in until he had some idea what was going on. Thats not proper procedure.
I think what the security officer did was reasonable considering the circumstances. The school isnt paying him to be a war hero. One person with a single gun running into an undiagnosed situation with an undetermined number of active shooters with a likely stockpile of high power guns, is a death sentence 99% of the time. The officer was immediately on the radio getting the police there, and gathering information. Thats about the best we could have hoped for in an active shooting full of confusion and panic. Chances are very high that if he had brandished his weapon in view of the gunman, he would have instantly become another statistic.
This isnt the movies. The guard wasnt going to charge into that building in a hail of bullets and take out the bad guys. He was going to be confused, act irrationally and recklessly through his fear , and possibly make things worse. At the very least, he would have created more confusion for the rest of the police to have to deal with. Two people with guns in a building is far more dangerous than one person, even is one is a good guy.
