They long for their halcyon years - the 50s and 60s - when they could still tell those minorities where to go, when post-war factory jobs paid great wages with great benefits, and daddy could go to work and mommy would stay home and cook. Those days! They were at their best then, but they haven't been right since. They can't adapt, they can't look forward, only backward at what once was. The future scares them because they're totally unprepared for it, and don't want to prepare for it. It's much easier standing in a crowd shouting MAGA! MAGA! MAGA! What they really mean is, make America like it used to be. Ain't gonna' happen, deplorables. 
It's a global economy now. The days of Americans hogging up all the gravy in the world are over. We have to share the gravy, whether you like it, or not.
